Penha Longa Golf Resort – Atlantic Course
The Penha Longa Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort’s Atlantic Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., was opened in 1992. This 18 hole, par 72 championship course of 7,000 yards is particularly attractive due to the conditioning and breathtaking views of the ocean with Estoril and Cascais in the foreground, and also of the Sintra Hills. The opening holes and the final flourish share a wooded valley in the shadow of the mountains, while others arch and plunge throughout the hillside. Penha Longa hosted the 1994 & 1995 Portuguese Open Championships.
Oitavos Dunes
Located on the famous Estoril coast, 25 kilometres from Lisbon, the Oitavos Dunes course, designed by Arthur Hills, is set among pine woods and reforested dunes in an area of great natural beauty. Surrounded by the Sintra Mountains to the North and by the Atlantic Ocean to the South and West, the course built among the natural sand dunes provides Scottish-like playing conditions. Since is opening in 2001 it has held several professional tournaments including the European Tour Senior Open and the Portuguese Open. Oitavos Dunes is an Audubon International Gold Certified Signature Sanctuary, the first in Europe to receive this status.
Estoril Golf Club
Overlooking the sea and the town below, the Estoril Golf Club, designed by Mackenzie Ross, is set among eucalyptus, pine and mimosa trees. Since the opening of the course in 1936 there have been a number of improvements made to its original layout. The stunning par 3 holes all pose different challenges.
Belas Clube de Campo
Designed by William “Rocky” Roquemore, Belas Championship Golf Course is set with the Sintra mountains as a backdrop between Belas and Queluz. The course is divided into two contrasting landscapes with the first crossing a natural terrain and the second running through the housing development. Two notable holes for their beauty and challenge are the 2nd Par 5 called ‘Augusta’ as it was constructed to be like the Masters venue hole 13, and the 18th Par 4 which is protected by a lake.
Praia d’El Ray Golf & Beach Resort
Set among extensive pine forests and undulating dunes, with spectacular views over the Atlantic and the Berlengas Islands beyond, Praia D’El Rey Golf Course is one of the most stunning courses in Portugal. The Par 73 18-hole course was designed by Cabell B.Robinson and opened in June of 1997. Deep bunkers, sloping greens and sandy dunes contrast sharply with the lush fairways, providing a complete golfing challenge. The course is a mixture of seaside links and parkland holes.
Pestana Beloura Golf Course
Located at the foothills of the Sintra Mountains, the Par 72 Pestana Beloura Golf Course, designed by Rocky Roquemore, provides an enjoyable round for golfers of all levels. The course has been planted with thousands of trees and flowers including eucalyptus, oak, pine, magnolia, palm as well as other exotic species. Water comes into play on many of the holes as they meander between the various lakes and streams that border the fairways.
Troia Golf Course
Opened in 1982 and designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the Par 72 Troia Golf Championship Course is one of the most challenging courses in Portugal. This links course is laid along the Troia Peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sado Estuary with the Arrabida mountain range as its backdrop. Hole #3 runs along the beach with a magnificent sea view and the 18th, a Par 5 dog-let left has an elevated green with three frontal bunkers.
