Gabriel Group, St. Andrews, May 2014

Gabriel Group, St. Andrews, May 2014

Every other year for the past 26 years 24 or more of my fellow golf club members and our friends take a golf holiday somewhere in the British Isles.  We started planning our May 2014 trip in the fall of 2012 and chose Debbie Bussey of Absolutely Golf & Travel to handle the arrangements.

The trip was 18 days long and had 3 legs, including 15 rounds at 15 of the greatest courses in Scotland and Northern Ireland (9 of the top 100 courses in the world), while staying at only 3 different hotels with pre-planned meal reservations at different restaurants each night.  Some participants could only get away for a portion of the trip, so in all there were 29 mostly seasoned and demanding mid to high-handicap golfers.  Through Debbie’s planning we had a 50 passenger bus and one driver throughout the trip.  Individual pickup arrangements for each participant were required as no more than 2 arrived on the same flight. She even helped us get uniforms for our Ryder Cup team event.  In short the trip was flawless – everything was anticipated.

We all were able to play the St. Andrews Old Course and Muirfield.  We had dinner at the St. Andrews Golf Club overlooking the 18th green and the R&A, and entertainment by actors portraying Old Tom Morris and his colleague giving us a dramatized lecture on golf during his era.  Debbie also arranged for a Piper and other entertainment at Turnberry.  The list of extras goes on and with each the execution was terrific.  We even suspected she somehow arranged for great weather!  Without question this was our best ever U.K. adventure, despite very high scores.

It is with great pleasure we strongly endorse Debbie Bussey and Absolutely Golf & Travel.

John Gabriel, Newport Beach CA – May, 2014

Debbie,

Thanks for arranging a second great ‘once in a lifetime Irish golf trip.’ I look forward to trying to top this trip, but that may be impossible.

Nineteen days, ten rounds of golf and perfect weather made for the most enjoyable and relaxing vacation I have ever taken. A schedule of two days of golf followed by a day of travel or sightseeing kept my old bones refreshed and gave me the opportunity to see much of Ireland’s relatively unexplored countryside. Taking the road less traveled (and those roads up in Donegal, Sligo, Mayo and Connemara really are LESS traveled) up to the Northwest and West of Ireland provided spectacular golf links.

Whenever asked by my Irish hosts which links was my favorite, I really could not choose one. I started to keystroke the courses that stood out on this trip, but found that I was typing in the name of every course I played. Let’s just say that the extra travel time up into the northern reaches of the country was well worth it and I would recommend a similar itinerary to any of your clients.

Your recommended and selected combination of luxury/near luxury and tourist hotels, and bed and breakfasts was excellent. However, the Stella Maris in Ballycastle was, again, the highlight of my overnight stays. The weather was spectacular – no rain during my nine scheduled and my one extra golf rounds. In fact, no rain until I headed to Shannon Airport to leave the Emerald Isle. Granted, that is unusual, but this time I won the weather lottery!

Ennis was a great choice for my final overnights and departure. The Old Ground hotel was charming with its garden and Poets Corner Bar. Ennis provided excellent shopping opportunities to pick up the gifts I neglected to buy because of my concentration on golf. When I have time to sit down and read my notes from the trip I will provide you some more detailed comments, but everything really did go perfectly.

My tee times were perfect and every course had a caddy for me as I had requested. I had the same member caddies for both my rounds at Ballyliffin and Rosapenna which made for great continuity and a comfortable golfer/caddy relationship on those links. When my caddy, Johnny McDermott, and I reached the twelfth tee, the highest point on the Connemara links, he told me to sit down, enjoy the view and poured out coffee and tea for us and served scones and cookies! How can these experiences be topped??

Sincerely, Allan Toomey, September 2014

Debbie:

As I am sure you’ve heard the weather on the trip was outstanding… I can count on less than 1 hand the number of rain days I have had in the UK/Ireland on my 20+ trips over the last 15 years.

The golf was great…the food was terrific at the Smokehouse. Rozzer’s was a HUGE hit with the guys. GREAT recommendation. Geraldine was a fantastic host. The Malton bent over backwards for us all week. Only gripe would be the quality of the continental breakfasts on the early days, but that would be nitpicky on my part.

As for transport… I have never had a finer driver in all my years than Bruno. The guy was a marvel. Gracious to a fault, timely, hard worker, took care of every need for every person…I don’t think I would ever do another tour of Ireland with any other driver. Lastly, thanks to you for all the attention and help you gave our group.

You left no detail unturned and I hope to be able to use AGT for our Portugal group in 2015.

Larry Crystal, RI

Dear Debbie,

The Big East guys and I wanted to thank you for all of your hard work and efforts in making our golf outing a huge success!!!! The hotels were top notch and the golfing was spectacular! We couldn’t have had a better time without your planning and organizing.

Thank you again!
Tim Higgins & The Big East Guys!

“We had 20 golfers and the overwhelming consensus is that we had the best possible golf trip to Southwest Ireland arranged by Debbie Bussey and Absolutely Golf.”

William Finn, LA

Debbie,

Thank You! Did we ever have a great trip. Where do I start? Cassidy’s was a perfect location and a comfortable, solid 3-star place. Location to everything was an easy walk and it was exactly what we wanted. Dublin was fun. The pubs and people were the highlights and going to the K Club (for the Ryder Cup) was special. But for me the trip started on Monday when John Finnegan picked us up. He was an important part of our great time. What a guy. He is coming to CA in Nov. and we’re fetting him one night. He really was an exceptional help throughout the trip. The Brocks and the Vaughans were also fantastic. Both properties were perfect for us and the guys were raving about choosing them. (I gave you the deserved credit!). But besides the accommodations Aoife & Seamus and Maria & Michael were so helpful and charming we felt lucky to be staying there.

The golf was unbelievable. No one ever wants to play at home. As Nobli said “the best hole at home isn’t even close to the worst hole we played”. Highest kudos to Ballybunion and Lahinch! The trip was everything we’d hoped for over the last 3 years and almost everyone mentioned Wales in 2010 at least once! Thank you very much for your hard work, guidance, advice and friendship. We will certainly insist that anyone going to golf in Europe contact you first. Thanks again for everything.

Debbie,
I just wanted to say “thanks” for putting together such a fantastic trip for us. Also, for arranging such great weather — no rain gear needed, just sun block! The courses were unbelievable. Each one had its own special qualities and beauty. The Vaughan was great (and so was Michael – see picture attached). The Ross and Adare were also very comfortable. I have to say though that a great big part of our overall experience was John Finnnigan, our driver. I can’t say enough about him. He took care of everything! We didn’t have to worry about a thing. And what an entertainer. I would certainly recommend you to anyone who asks for advice about golf in the British Isles. I can’t wait to do it again!

Best regards and thank you again.

Debbie,

I just wanted to echo Tom Larkin’s note about what a great trip you arranged for us. The schedule was perfect regarding the Golf courses we played and the hotels in which we slept. I particularly enjoyed the Ross, even though it was not a traditional old Irish style. It was located in a great spot. The Adare Manor and the accommodations were exactly what the doctor ordered. I only wish we had more time there. I would only offer one suggestion, when a group of 60+ year olds want to play golf for six days with no breaks, tell them that they are not man enough to do that, and do them a favor, schedule a couple of days to rest their weary bones. Thank you again for the great time.

Debbie,
I wanted to drop you a note and let you know how much we all appreciated your work on our recent trip to Ireland. The golf was great, Teach de Broc was remarkable, and our driver, Martin Wilde of ProBus made the trip unforgettable. He couldn’t have been more accommodating and informative. Rest assured that I’ll refer any inquiries about arrangements for Irish golf or travel to you, and I hope to have the opportunity to return someday soon.

Thanks again,

A note from AGT President, Debbie Bussey:
“We loved the story below regarding our client’s encounter at Shannon Airport with our returning U.S. Marines so much that we just had to share it!”. Click here to go directly to this paragraph

I have just gotten back from the best trip to Ireland that I have ever taken. I have been there many times and have played courses from just about every County in both the Republic and Northern Ireland, but this one topped them all..As you know having the right group of people to travel with can make or break a trip, and this group knew to a man that we were there to play some of the best courses in the Northwest and Southwest, but we were also there to have fun off the course as well. Despite some 50 MPH winds and a little rain here and there – Mission accomplished!…The courses at Ballyliffin were in great shape with the greens as good as I have seen them. Glashedy has always been the more challenging course, but the work that the Faldo Group are doing with the Old Course (repositioning bunkers, tees and taking advantage of the fabulous piece of real estate that they have hard against the North Atlantic) will make Ballyliffin a must play destination for people playing in the Northern part of the island.

The new Ballyliffin Lodge and Spa is one of the best new hotels in the country and for those who might be traveling with a spouse or non-golfer, it really justifies bringing them along. The food is fabulous and the Manager Cecil Doherty has managed to create a Four Star Hotel and restaurant where you could feel comfortable staying for a week or more..Our stay in Sligo at the Yeats Country Inn was fine and very convenient since it was right across the street from the Rosses Point course.Rosses Point was in the best shape I have seen it. The greens were like what we would expect at some of our US courses….Enniscrone.The course was in great shape, but we had to wait about an hour for the rain to stop before we started, but it was worth it as the sun came out and we all got to enjoy one of the best courses in all of Ireland. The first few holes are dramatic along the Ocean, then you go inland for some long wide open holes then the last four or five holes through the dunes to the Atlantic which are spectacular.

Vaughan Lodge has about 20 rooms that are brand new and the best furnishings we saw anywhere. The owners Michael and Maria treated us as if we were staying in their house and they had known us forever. This place could be the model for how to take care of travelers. As usual we were not all on time for the dinner but that was not a problem for one of the best and most accommodating chefs I have ever met. Even if people aren’t lucky enough to stay at Vaughan Lodge (when this place gets known they won’t be able to get in) they should eat there if they are smart.

Checking in at Shannon took a long time. When we finally got through security with about an hour and a half to wait some went shopping and some went to the bar. While at the bar a few of us encountered some US Marines who were on their way home from Iraq after an 8 month tour. They all had their fatigues on and looked very happy to be getting back to their families. We started talking with a few and telling them how much we appreciated what they were doing for Iraq and the World. Mike Dwyer asked when was the last time they had been served a beer and 8 months seemed like a long time. We asked the bartender to correct the problem and the Guinness started flowing. These kids were so appreciative that they just opened up to us about what life had been like in Iraq and how morale was generally good. As the Guinness kept flowing, we were approached by one of the Commanders who introduced himself and said “I don’t know who you guys are, but I want to thank you for buying my Battalion their first beer in 8 months.” All of a sudden we realized we were surrounded by about 300 of America’s best fighting unit in the world. I have never felt so safe in my life. Seeing the looks on these soldier’s faces and shaking hands with hundreds of them made the tab inconsequential (a thirsty Battalion can really bang’em back with the best of the Irish – I kept up with them though). Mike Dwyer started it and I’m proud to have been a part of it. Great idea Mike and a great way for me and my 15 friends to end the best trip I’ve ever made to Ireland.

Debbie Bussey and Absolutely Golf have done all my trips and nothing happens by accident with them. In the eight months that it took to take-off she tweaked a few things here and there, but experience told me that each one would make it better and it did. I can’t wait to see what my 2006 trip will be like, because I know I’m going back at least once. I have met a lot of wonderful people because of my love of Ireland, and Absolutely Golf and Debbie have made it all happen as if I were just going for a walk. Thanks Debbie”

Debbie,
Once again, Absolutely Golf did a marvelous job in planning and executing a great trip to Scotland. John, our driver, was fabulous. Always attentive to our needs and there when we needed him most, in the middle of a 20 mph wind and rain storm on the 14th at Troon with a bottle of single malt. Is this guy good or what! Thanks for your guidance Debbie in preparing an outstanding itinerary and we look forward to our next golf trip.

Cliff Allman,

I just want to let you know how wonderful the trip was and how much I appreciate your professionalism & creativity. Debbie, it was a sensational trip. Enjoyed the comfortable bus & very good driver. Lahinch, Enniscrone & Ballyliffin courses just the slightest notch above Rosses Point (we played 2X). Portsalon looked fantastic – had wind there that day which actually blew Iain off a tee box plus sideways rain – weather washed out the greens after two holes -but boy it looked sweet – do want to play that course. We should have waited about 90 minutes there and we would have had a perfect day. The Ballyliffin Lodge is great – I used the spa (steam & sauna / Jacuzzi & pool) 2 times – great stuff. Yeats was neat & clean, and a two minute walk to the golf club – location, location, location. Vaughn’s Lodge is true 4 star material – walk to town – handsome residents lounge & bar – food was the best on the trip, French chef & wait staff – do not miss a meal there!. Lodge owners Michael & Maria were warm and welcoming, superb in all ways. Incidentally, I told the all the guys in our group (twice) that Absolutely Golf was the place to go for trips to Ireland, Scotland, Portugal & Wales (did I miss any?) Thanks again, Debbie”

“Hello Debbie, Well after the initial Delta snafus (missed flight, lost golf clubs etc.) our trip was fabulous. The courses were great – Old Head – most spectacular course any of us have played including Pebble Beach, Bandon Dunes, etc. K-Club the best conditioned course we’ve ever played…..Alan and Mike also enjoyed Lahinch and would put it just a notch or two behind Ballybunion. The people everywhere could not have been nicer or more accommodating especially with some of our problems. All of the hotels were perfect. Seamus and Aoife Broc were really friendly and would do anything we asked. The Kildare was something else, not necessarily the warmest and friendliest but very nice and first class all the way – the golf, the food, the rooms, everything. Speaking of food, it was fabulous everywhere and for four guys born and raised in New Orleans with the best food in the world that’s saying something. It certainly wasn’t cheap but it was excellent. Shanahan’s, Man Fridays, the pizzas at Teach de Broc, all were very good. Last but certainly not least was our driver Phil.He was really special…Again, THANK YOU for a very memorable trip and you can be sure I will recommend you and AGT to everyone I know. I look forward to hearing from you.

All my best,

“Debbie, for your info and that of your future guests/clients – Pat Buckley greatly added to our enjoyment of the trip – he has to be the best driver in Ireland and was a complete delight to be around each and every day!!! He got us to all of our tee times in plenty of time and was not only punctual but early each day – he was most certainly one of the best things we included in our trip – with a group like ours we needed someone like Pat and we would not have been comfortable without him. The golf was great as well but Ballybunion, Tralee, and Old Head were much better than Waterville and Lahinch in our opinions. Old Head is spectacular and Tralee was 2nd on our list. Great golf, great scenery, great people, and a great driver all added up top a great trip for us – in the words of Bob Hope- thanks for the memories!

“Debbie, Thanks for the call today to check on my Irish golf adventures. As I said, I had a very good time, came home thoroughly relaxed, wished that I had scheduled a longer stay, and already started planning a return trip before I got on the plane back to the States. All of Absolutely Golf’s arrangements worked perfectly. In particular the golf guest houses you recommended, especially the Stella Maris in Ballycastle, were perfect for the trip I wanted and made for a much more memorable event. I’d call it a once in a lifetime trip if I weren’t already plotting my return! As I mentioned, in the finest Army tradition, I drafted an ‘AAR’ (after action report) before leaving Ireland with observations, lessons learned, and things that I might do differently next time. Much confirms the travel information you already provide to each of your clients but some is personal insight. I’ve attached a copy of my ‘report’ for whatever interest and value it might be to you or future clients. Thanks for all your help!!”

Hi Debbie!
The trip to southwest Ireland was wonderful! Everything about it was absolutely perfect! My brother and I both enjoyed it! All I could say was ‘awesome’ until he got so sick of me saying it I had to change it to something else. The golf was great, the Adare Manor and The Park Hotel were very nice, the flights were all smooth and Don Dowling was absolutely the best guide/driver ever! I took over 600 pictures and have yet to view them all. I’m still on Ireland time, so have been going to bed at 9:30 pm, but when I don’t get home until 8:30 pm from commuting – it doesn’t leave much time for getting thru them all. I brought home something a little extra – have a case of poison oak on my arms and legs/feet. Itches like crazy and am taking medicine and applying cream. That’s what I get for looking for stray golf balls at Adare golf course – but it was worth it!

Let me express my appreciation to you and Absolutely Golf for making our recent trip to Scotland a once in a lifetime experience. Let me start with your selection of our accommodations which were uniformly superb. From Morangie House to the Colonel’s House at Greywalls, our group could not have experienced greater hospitality. I particularly enjoyed the variety of locations as it is impossible to confuse Rusack’s in St. Andrew’s with the newly constructed lodges at Turnberry, and yet each had its own personality and charm. Your selection of golf courses was also impeccable and we all had the feeling that we had seen it all. From quirky Prestwick to those not so well known courses such as Tain and Western Gailes to the time honored giants of Carnoustie, Troon, Turnberry and Muirfield to the newest addition of Kingsbarns and, if we had a favorite, Royal Dornoch, we found that every course had its own identity. All eight of us join in thanking you and hoping that we can return in the near future.”

With my best regards,

“Just a short note to say, “Well done!” The trip was a complete success. The golf, accommodations, and travel, especially our driver Pat Buckley, were superb. Each of the eight of us agreed it was a once in a lifetime trip we will always remember. Each of us also know we owe you and Absolutely Golf & Travel a sincere thank you.”

“We have just returned from a golf tour of southwest Ireland. The golf arrangements and accommodations were outstanding. Our accommodation hosts all knew Debbie and had only good things to say about her. We used a different agency for a trip to Scotland, and the arrangements for this trip were far superior to those for the Scotland trip. The Teach de Broc at Ballybunnion was outstanding and so convenient to the golf course. Our hats are off to Absolutely Golf & Travel.”

“Debbie,
I wanted to thank you for organizing a wonderful Scotland trip. It was so amazing!!! Everything worked out perfectly in terms of accommodations, the car, golf, caddies, etc. Our round at Prestwick was typical Scottish weather – 40mph wind and sideways rain twice during the round. I was fine but my dad and husband were getting concerned that the rain would last the entire round. At Turnberry we had a lot of wind but beautiful sunshine. At Kingsbarns it was sunny and warm and at Carnoustie cloud cover but no wind. I suspect that we got very lucky. I really loved all of the courses but Prestwick may have been my favorite because it was so old school. They all were pretty amazing though. The caddies were great – very funny! Thanks again for everything.”

“I had a wonderful time enjoying some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. The golf was all very challenging and the courses in excellent condition. The transportation arrangement far exceeded our expectation and sleeping arrangements were good. I think the group we were with made the trip even that much better but all and all a fantastic trip. I will forward your email address to a few friends who have asked for details. Thanks for arranging a great golf trip!!

“After ten years of going to Scottsdale, Arizona with our group of four single digit golfers, we chose AGT to plan our first trip to Ireland. The result was fabulous: from the best and most knowledgeable driver; to great choices in golf courses; to pre-arranged dinner reservations at excellent pubs and restaurants and a fabulous manor house where we were treated as “lords of the manor.” We highly recommend AGT, they really know Ireland and how to cater to first time visitors.

Bob Frankel,

“As the time since our return grows, so too does our appreciation for your help and our awe at the experience we had. I think the trip exceeded all of our expectations and has left us with a determination to return. I may have told you that one of our number has been seriously considering joining either Old Head or Tralee as an international member. I think that speaks volumes about the time we had and the reception we had at every stop. Thanks again for your help and patience.”

“I would like to heartily recommend this company for travel to Ireland! They were with us every step of the way, helping to set up the perfect trip and making sure we had the best of vacations. Debbie is a pure professional. If you are thinking of heading to Ireland to play golf and you don’t use these people, you will lose out on a great trip!

BJ Franklin,

Our trip was FANTASTIC!!! You were absolutely on target in everything that you told us regarding the changes we should have made to our previous itinerary. The Brooks Hotel was charming—the staff couldn’t have been nicer. Sheen Falls Lodge was gorgeous! Adare Manor was stunning, especially at night. The highlight of the trip was playing Ballybunion. We played with a local Irishman, an English physician and our caddy. It was amazing! Should you ever need references in this neck of the woods, feel free to use our names! Thanks again for planning this wonderful trip! We really loved every minute!”

“You have my most sincere thanks for the arrangements you made for our trip. As the non-golfing member of the family, I can assure you that the trip was marvelous. I enjoyed my time when my husband was off playing golf and never felt at a loss or the least bit worried about being on my own. The day he played Ballybunion, after a short walk to the village, I spent the rest of the day lazing around Glin Castle and being treated like a queen. It was, as my husband said, a great trip!”

Pamela Livingston,

“Many thanks for all you did to make our week so enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed our stay at Ballyliffin and am so glad I joined the club. I look forward to many return trips there.

“I want to express my thanks and appreciation for a fantastic golf trip to Ireland that you put together. Your expertise and resourcefulness was really put to the test when Aer Lingus went on strike 4 days before our departure date. With every flight to Ireland overbooked you still found a way, and in the process, got us to Ireland a day earlier and an extra day in Dublin, at no additional cost, except the cost of the hotel room. You and your group are terrific. Would I recommend AGT? You bet I would, and I already have.

Jim Rainsford,
Roswell, GA

“I have traveled with AGT and its partners for over ten years. This included numerous trips to Scotland and over twenty trips to Ireland. These were all golf vacations, and I have never been disappointed. They have first hand experience of all the golf courses as well as lodging, restaurants and pubs. The service is professional and they always follow up. They can plan every detail of your trip, or get you started and allow you to fill in the blanks. They have not only performed at this level of service for me but for friends that I have referred to them.”

James Redfern,

“When you’re entrusting to someone else’s care the sales people who account for the biggest part of your business, they’d better be professional, reliable, creative, responsive and flexible. AGT is all that and more! They have recently managed sales incentive trips for us to Ireland and Portugal. No detail was too large or too small for the AGT staff. From arranging international mobile phones, low-sodium diets and last-minute itinerary changes to keeping us within budget but immersed in luxury, no one does it better than AGT. They know the right golf courses, the best “local favorites” restaurants and the “not to be missed” sights. Plus, they have the best in-country guides. Bottom line: AGT exceeds expectations.

Carol Bocell,
DANAHER POWER SOLUTIONS,

“This is to let you know how delighted we were with the golfing trip to Ireland which you arranged for us. The golf courses we played at were great and the accommodations everywhere first class. We will certainly recommend you and your organization to anyone thinking of an overseas golf tour.”

Lenore and Henry Rosenfeld,
Scarsdale, NY

“I just returned from the golf vacation of my dreams. Between the accommodations, golf courses and towns AGT recommended and we visited, the trip could not have been more seamless and memorable. We were treated like Scottish Royalty from beginning to end.”

Deb Chute,
Golf Digest,
Trumbull, CT

“I found AGT lives up to their name and provides an “absolutely great travel” experience. No matter how big or small the group, they provide the same level of “absolutely great service.” I had a small group and we played and stayed at all the best courses and guesthouses in Ireland. AGT took our itinerary ideas and put together a memorable trip. What tour operator calls you twice on the trip to make sure things are going good and living up to your expectations? AGT did! No detail was overlooked and everything went like clockwork. On top of that it’s comforting to know that the golf courses and guesthouses know the AGT people personally and enjoy working with them. You could go with another operator to the same places, and pay much more, if you want; but the service and details are what separates AGT from the rest.”

Richard Matullo,

“I just wanted to let you know how pleased my family was with Absolutely Golf’s handling of our vacation trip to Portugal this summer. We gave you almost no lead time, in high season, and you were able to pull off reservations, rental cars and airfare with no problem. You helped us organize our trip with ideas on good spots to tour from, sites that would interest our daughter and a wonderful team on the ground in Portugal to meet us at the airport. Our hotels were fabulous, our weather was wonderful and our travels were memorable. It was a pleasure working with you on this trip and I look forward to using your services again.”

Laura Thevenot,

“The trip was absolutely wonderful! The accommodations were perfect and the itinerary was just right. I want to thank you again as it truly was a once in a lifetime trip. If you ever need a testimonial letter or would like to use me as a reference for your service I will be happy to do so.”

Mike Mitchell,

“…the coach was quite comfortable, but more importantly, John Finnegan was more than a driver and guide, he was an absolute delight and truly a great part of our trip. As I mentioned, one of our group took ill at the last moment so we had only seven golfers. We asked John to join us in golf and he did. He was not only a fabulous golfer …but, more importantly, John’s wit and love for the game were infectious. He fit in with the group so well that he has seven invitations to play in our local Club member guest tournaments. We would welcome John on our future trips to the Kingdom of golf in an instant!! Indeed, we would even agree to drive the coach and give John a break, if that’s what it takes to have him with us again. Please let John know how much we think of him as a person and what a difference he made in our trip. Thanks again to you as well for all your help.”
